Artist Statement
For Kate Clarke, creating art is a way of processing and documentation. It's personal, even when the subject matter isn't.
“I am interested, there is not much that I am not interested in. I think as artists we are all interested and inquisitive by nature.”
The work explores the nature of human/social behaviours and culture. Sometimes from a dark or shocking perspective but always with a sense of humour. Her work usually depicts scenes or moments in time like a snapshot. Reading almost like a scene from a movie, they are silent, still and sometimes uncomfortable.
Despite drawing inspiration from a range of contemporary visual artists, most of Kate's inspiration comes from outside the ‘art’ world, gathering ideas from novels, philosophy, photography and film.
Kate’s work is interdisciplinary and the medium is usually determined by the concept or idea. She begins with an idea and lets the process and physical constraints influence the aesthetic of the work. Her colour palette and composition is intuitive and allows for a variety of potential outcomes.
